Clinical Profile: I have 27 years of experience in ophthalmology, with training experience from well-established institutions such as Birmingham & Midland Eye Hospital, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and the world famous Lions Eye Institute, Perth, Australia.
I have 18 years of experience at consultant-level, including private practice. As a specialist in cataract and vitreo-retinal surgery, I offer a range of lens implant surgery, under topical, local and general anaesthesia. My other interests include diabetic retinopathy and all surgical conditions affecting the retina.
I have a vast amount of experience in both routine and complex cataract surgery and I am able to perform both small and large incision surgery. In addition, I am one of most experienced vitreo-retinal surgeons in Scotland and skilled in managing all major complications of cataract surgery, including early problems and late complications.
I also provide a paediatric vitreo-retinal service at the Royal Sick Children’s Hospital, Edinburgh.
On a personal level, I am happily married with three children and my interests include badminton and golf. I am regularly invited to speak at both local and national events such as the British & Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons and I am honoured to be a member of The High Constables of Edinburgh.

I enjoy teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level. I have held prestigious posts such as Training Programme Director & Regional Advisor and taking the lead role in Modernising Medical Careers in Scotland.
I have been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for 18 years and have chaired the Training Committee of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for four years, becoming chief examiner and writing exams.
I am particularly proud of re-designing the FRCS diploma so that it could be undertaken by overseas candidates and helping to create new examining centres around the world, which ensures that ophthalmic surgeons across the globe have equally high standards. I also introduced vitreo-retinal and phacoemulsification surgery in Malawi.
